If you buy only the cheap dog collars at the dollar store or big box store, you're selling your dog short. When your dog is done with his bath he eagerly waits for you to put his collar back on him, right? It is because he loves his dog collar. Your dog loves to show off his collar and feels naked without out. A nice, fancy collar would likely make him or her very happy.

Dog Collar Types

There are many types of dog collars. Some you use only when walking your dog because as the collar is tugged, it tightens. You don't want to use this collar on your dog at any other time but walk time. There are also buckle types. These are the type that are like a buckle on a person's belt. It is a little old fashioned, but a nice, stylish look. The snap collar has a closure that snaps together and this collar is good for all the time use also. Then there are the decorative collars. These are like necklaces and made with fancy bead-work or chains and used only when the dog is dressed up. They are very fancy.

Finding The Snazzy Dog Collar

The pet stores are full of dog collars that are made in China. For something nice and fancy you'll need to find the artist that makes them. Some of those artists sell their dog collars on artist marketplace websites like Etsy, ArtFire and other sites catering to handmade goods. Another way to find the more unique dog collars is to do a search in your search engine and you'll pull up the artist's website. Enter the words "beaded dog collar" or "fancy dog collar" and that will usually pull up many websites of people who make dog collars by hand.

Sizes of Dog Collars

When buying a new dog collar, remember that you need to be able to put two fingers between the dog's neck and the collar. Ideally you should have the width of two fingers room between the neck and collar. So, if your dog have a ten inch neck, purchase a collar that will fit up to 12 inches to make sure you will have enough room and your dog will be comfortable. You don't want it to choke the dog when he puts on a little weight or gets caught up on something.

Colors of Dog Collars

Whatever color looks good to you, of course, but make sure it goes well with the color of your dog's fur. Your dog's coat is the judge of what is the best color in dog collar.

Materials of Dog Collars

The most common right now is the soft, woven vinyl fabric. You see a lot of those in the pet store. They are very easy to take care of. There is also leather which holds up very well over time. Beaded dog collars are usually sewn to either a leather collar or a vinyl type. They are all good choices of materials for dog collars.

Keepsakes and Dog Collars

It is a sad fact of life, but one day you'll probably outlive your dog. Your dog's collar and a keepsake that you'll treasure for the rest of your life. You can make a shadowbox with his or her collar and favorite toys and dog clothes.
