1886 Silver Buck Mint Marks, And What All these Marks Imply

,
By Eugene Walley

What mint marks can be found on an 1886 silver money, and exactly what do all these marks suggest? The existence of a mint marking, or even the deficiency of any marking designating the mint where the coin was made, can tell a whole lot about a particular coin. In 1886 there were three mints which produced silver dollars for at least a part of the year. These were the Philadelphia mint, the New Orleans mint, and the San Francisco mint.

If a coin doesn't have any mint marking then this can indicate 1 of 2 things. Either the mint which produced the coin didn't make a mark on the coins that were created or the coin has been so worn that the mint marking is no longer seen to the naked eye. A competent coin expert can usually determine which scenario exists. If the coin has many details leftover but there's virtually no mint mark then the coin was manufactured in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia mint produced 1886 silver buck coins that do not have any mark. These coins are usually obtained in poor situation so the lack of a mint marking cannot be apparent mainly because much of the particulars of the coin really are lost or blurred. The quality of the minting also plays a role in the coin cost. Coins which have crisp and apparent details are really worth more than coins which were improperly minted.

The San Francisco mint produced coins that have a little letter s as the mint marking. This is found on the rear of the coin and can impact the price of the silver buck. Coins which are in good condition or that are exceptional quality from the San Francisco mint can be worth much more than most of these silver money.

An 1886 silver dollar that has a small o as the mint marking was created in New Orleans. A few of the coins that this mint created are extremely valuable if they're in mint condition and have never been circulated.
