I normally hate lists and especially "top 6, top 5 etc." but it's easiest to combine multiple amazing sunsets into one post so here goes... What's not to love about a sunset? Only the lack of heat and there after maybe? I just love sitting relaxing with a beer or a coffee without a care in the world watching this hot ball drop itself from our visible sky for a few hours. This list are just odd or quirky places I have watched the sun go down, not necessarily the best but certainly they provided me with satisfying moments and memories:
1. Sunset at Casapueblo, URUGUAY:
Of all the places I have watched the sun go down, Casapueblo has to rank highest. This amazing seafront townhouse is a museum and an experience in itself, without the added bonus that it has the best view of the sunset you could ever imagine. Really it is incredible. From Punta del Este get a bus out to Punta Ballena (you will have to ask the driver to stop, otherwise you will end up in Maldonado or Montevideo). Once you get out at Punta Ballena, you will realise it is basically a small beach resort. Follow the signs and the path down the coast until you reach Casapueblo. It's about a 2 kilometre walk to the entrance to Casapueblo itself. It's basically an elaborate house which is nicely built and nestled into the hills on the Uruguayan south coast. Pay your entrance fee, enjoy the museum then grab a seat on the balcony for the best sunset you will ever see. Let them supply you with beer, music, food and an incredible ambiance as you watch the hot ball sink over the horizon.
2. Sunset at Bruny Island, Tasmania, AUSTRALIA:
Bruny Island my not bethe most southern island in Australia, but it has to be one of them. It's a tranquil and inspiring little remote island, you will arrive (most likely) by ferry from the town of Kettering in mainland Tasmania. Just before sunset head to "the neck" in the centre of Bruny to view both ways as the sun sets. Climb up the steps to the top and sit down and relax. It really is quiet here. And the sun fading as it shines on the calm water is an image and memory you won't forget.
3. Sunset at Boscombe in Bournemouth, ENGLAND:
I spent six years living in Bournemouth yet don't always write about it, so here it is getting some publicity in the form of a place on my top six random sunsets. While I worked away down by the beach, far to the west the sun was setting, taking with it the lighting over the splendid beaches and being replaced by darkness, which is when Bournemouth comes alive. It may be best remembered for a beach and party town, but believe me, get yourself a cocktail and watch the sunset by Bournemouth beach. It's glorious!
4. Sunset from The Fortress, Danxiashan, Guangdong, CHINA:
China wins in terms of places you've never heard of that are amazing. Danxiashan is a mountainous area in the north of Guangdong Province and it just oozes natural beauty. You can do a hike past a rock in the shape of a man's dick penis or willy (!) and after that you are high up staring down at the countryside of China. By sunset you'll be in awe as you watch the sinking hot ball from a fortress in a place nobody has ever heard of.
5. Sunset on Kenting Beach in TAIWAN:
Taiwan has enough magic to keep you entertained for a lifetime. Our trip to Kenting on the south coast was amazing. Late afternoon myself and my travel buddy cracked open a tin of beer, went for a splash in the waves and watched the sun sink away beyond us from a quiet beach. Total heaven.
6. Sunset at Lam Tin in HONG KONG:
It wasn't intentional to put Asia on this list three times but Hong Kong has to be on it. With a vast array of skyscrapers, mountains and constant traffic flow, this city allows the freedom to enjoy sunset in a more relaxed way if you're up for it. Head over to Lam Tin in the east of Kowloon where you can see the sunset to the west and get a spectacular view of Hong Kong Island. Bliss.
So there you go - 6 random unusual places to watch the sun go down. I can't wait for my next sunset viewing. An incredible thing to see while travelling around.
