Cheerleaders are known for supporting athletic teams by leading fans in various cheers and chants. Cheerleading has evolved over time to include dance, stunting and tumbling. The tumbling skills utilized in cheerleading are not quite as advanced and polished as someone training to be a competitive gymnast. Still, a cheerleader needs to receive the proper training before attempting many of the moves in a cheerleading routine. Keep a few things in mind before enrolling in cheerleading gymnastics classes in NJ.

Because taking a class requires a significant monetary and investment, it is important to know you want to cheer. There are several styles of NJ cheerleading squads. Some cheering squads do stunts, dance and tumble; some tumble; and other squads do not stunt, dance or tumble. Find out what style of cheerleading the squad you are most interested in uses.

Next, research gymnastics schools in the area. Central Jersey gymnastics schools train students to compete as artistic gymnasts. At these gyms, there are balance beams, high bars and vaulting tables. They also have spring floors to practice tumbling and stunts. While the focus is not on cheerleading, some schools offer classes in basic tumbling, tumbling for cheerleaders and power tumbling.

Cheerleading gyms focus on cheering and maybe dance. Instruction is offered in stunting, cheering and tumbling. A major part of cheerleading gyms is the opportunity for kids to cheer as a part of a competitive team. Joining a team will incur additional expenses.

If you want to get involved with competitive cheerleading, you generally must know how to several tumbling moves. Basic tumbling skills often included in cheerleading are forward rolls, cartwheels and round-offs. Advanced tumbling skills like full twists, back handsprings and tucks need to be mastered under the supervision of a spotter or coach.

To save money, try to find basic tumbling classes in another venue and then go to a specialty gym for advanced training. Children often learn how to do cartwheels and round-offs on their own. You can learn how to do those skills and others like a walkover and aerial at recreation centers, summer camps or in a dance class.

Finally, talk to other cheerleaders in your area about their experiences. Ask them about various gymnastics classes in NJ. Call each gym to schedule a tour of the facility before making a decision to enroll.
