By Cecil D. Barton

Throughout history you'll find governments and it's people using gold and silver coins, like gold and silver, as legitimate currency. Fact being, the first known coin produced was a gold-silver alloy about 700 B.C.

A lot of people don't realize nor think about this, nevertheless the United States' thirteen colonies used a dollar coin way prior to the revolution. It was a silver dollar coin minted by the Spaniards in Mexico. They utilized the Central and South American silver mines to mint the coins.

The initial American silver dollar wouldn't be minted until 1794. It could be referred to as Flowing Hair dollar, also it would be minted for just a couple of years. The 1794 Flowing Hair dollar coin is perhaps one of the most rare dollar coins. One 1794 Flowing Hair silver dollar coin goes from $60,000 to $637,000! This dollar coin could be followed by the Draped Bust silver dollar. It will be produced from 1795 to 1804.

You wish know very well what is amazing? Perhaps though America had started minting their very own dollar coins. The Spanish dollar coin (Pieces of Eight) remained legal tender in the United States until 1857.

America is filled with wonderful dollar coins as well as their history is just as lovely. But today we do not use silver coins in our daily lives. Rather, we use cheap alloys. For example, our George Washington quarter these days is made out of a copper-nickel alloy.

However this does not necessarily mean that silver dollar coins have lost their lust and cost. That is far from the reality. The US Mint does strike silver dollars today. They are classified as the American Silver Dollar, and you'll even get the evidence version of this silver dollar.

Nowadays there aren't many dollar coins which lovers seek out. Here are a few of them: American Silver Dollar, Morgan dollar, Peace dollar, Eisenhower dollar, Susan B. Anthony dollar, Sacagawea dollar and the new Presidential dollars. Many of such dollar coins you could collect the proof coins version
